Where to Buy

I have bought plants from most but not all of the nurseries on this list. I am not trying to list every native plant nursery in existence but if you know of one (or own one) that you think belongs on this list, please let me know. You can click on the link for each nursery for exact locations, contact information and more.

Annie’s Annuals
If you get on the mailing list for Annie’s you’ll hear about the various specials and can save some $ when it comes to buying. Choose the California Natives List in the left column to see what they have in stock. It varies quite a lot.
Bay Natives
Bay Natives is located in San Francisco and is a great source for a lot of Bay Area native plants as well as other California natives suitable for urban landscapes.
California Flora Nursery
From their website: Specializing in California native plants and habitat gardening.
Capitol Wholesale Nursery
Although Capitol usually sells to landscapers in the trade , they’ve helped me locate native plants I couldn’t find anywhere else. They are located in San Jose and they will deliver for an additional fee.
Central Coast Wilds
Located in Santa Cruz, Central Coast Wilds does a lot of contract growing of native plants for restoration but they do sell to the public. One thing I really like about them is that I can usually find small containers of items and save some money plus give the plants a chance to do their growing in the ground rather than in a pot.
East Bay Wilds
Pete at East Bay Wilds is a terrific resource for California native plants. His nursery in the heart of Oakland is filled with a wide variety of native plants and some hard-to-find and unexpected treasures as well. Pete is also a fabulous photographer who shares his photos of native plants both in the landscapes he designs and those he finds on his hikes through0ut the still-wild areas of California. You can see his photos on his Flickr pages.
Far West Bulb Farm
Native bulbs via mail order. Only available at certain times of the year.
Freshwater Farms
Freshwater Farms carries a lot of native plants but their specialty is plants for the riparian/wetlands area. They do ship via mail order.
Larner Seeds
Larner carries the largest variety of high quality native seeds.
Las Pilitas
Las Pilitas is so much more than just a nursery. They are located in Southern California so I haven’t had the chance to shop there yet but I spend a lot of time on their site because it is packed so much information about native plants. You can read about the various plant communities, how to garden for wildlife and read up on the habits and needs of thousands of plants.
Middlebrook Gardens Nursery
Middlebrook Gardens does native garden landscape designs but they also have a plant nursery that is arranged by plant community. Located in downtown San Jose.
Mostly Natives Nursery
From their website: We are a small retail nursery located in the northwest corner of Marin County, California, with a wide variety of native and non-native perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees. Plants are available in small pots and one gallons. A few trees and shrubs are available in larger containers. We grow our own stock, so some plants are in limited supply.
Native Revival
Located in Aptos, Native Revival is a wonderful nursery with a nice variety of plants.
Telos Rare Bulbs
I had wonderful and quick service ordering native bulbs from here.
Tree of Life Nursery
Since this nursery is located in San Juan Capistrano I haven’t had the chance to visit yet but their website has a lot of very useful information about native plants.
Theodore Payne Foundation
Another southern California nursery that I haven’t visited in person but I do use their site a lot for information about native plants and wildflowers.
Yerba Buena Nursery
Located in Woodside, Yerba Buena is another one of my favorite nurseries as well as a great website for information. Their inventory/availability system is usually pretty up-to-date and they will also deliver for an additional fee. It is worth taking the time to go spend a good part of a day at the nursery just to observe the many mature plants in a natural setting.
